In 1996, hip-hop was fracturing into shiny suits on one coast and cinematic mafia tales on the other, leaving A Tribe Called Quest to figure out how to age gracefully on Beats, Rhymes and Life. Following up previous masterpieces is always a nightmare. Instead of chasing the euphoric highs of their earlier work, the group pivoted into the shadows.

The jazz loops got darker. The drums hit with a thicker, unquantized slump that dragged just behind the beat. Fans at the time called this record their first stumble, but they were dead wrong.
