Tems and the Sovereign Producer Playbook

April 3, 2026·1 min read

Tems performed the self-produced ballad “What You Need” on The Tonight Show this week, a victory lap for her Love Is a Kingdom EP. Backed by a live band and a fringe curtain, the performance served as a reminder that the Nigerian star has effectively bypassed the traditional "hit-by-committee" model that dominates the crossover market.

While most global exports are pressured to lean on Western songwriters to "translate" their sound, Tems wrote, composed, and produced nearly every track on this project herself. This autonomy follows her 2025 Grammy win for “Love Me JeJe” and the critical success of 2024’s Born in the Wild. By maintaining a 90% plus stake in her own creative labor, she isn't just a vocalist—she’s a vertically integrated business.

Most artists use late-night slots to prove they can fit into the American pop machine. Tems uses them to show the machine how much she doesn't need it.
