Shyne Honored With Key To The City Of Brooklyn

April 29, 2026·1 min read

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso presented Shyne with the Key to the City during a ceremony at the East Flatbush Young Men’s Mentorship Expo this past weekend. The honor recognizes the rapper’s complex journey from the definitive era of Bad Boy Records to his current role as a diplomat and advocate. In addition to the key, Reynoso officially proclaimed April 25, 2026, as “Shyne Day” in the borough. The recognition marks a full-circle moment for the Belizean-born artist, who grew up in the streets of East Flatbush before his career—and life—were interrupted by a decade-long incarceration and subsequent deportation. Since returning to Belize, Shyne has transitioned from the grit of turn-of-the-century hip-hop to the halls of government, currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives. During the ceremony, Shyne emphasized the importance of community investment, noting that his return to Brooklyn was centered on pouring back into the next generation. It is a rare instance of a hip-hop figure bridging the gap between street-level influence and international policy, cementing his legacy as one of Brooklyn's most resilient exports.
