The Isley Brothers Trademark Lawsuit Ends; Ronald Isley’s Registration Remains

The federal lawsuit over the name of one of soul music’s most enduring dynasties has ended. According to reporting from Music Business Worldwide, Ronald Isley and the estate of his late brother Rudolph Isley filed to dismiss their dispute over the “Isley Brothers” trademark.

On August 12, counsel for both sides filed a stipulation of dismissal with prejudice in Chicago federal court. That prevents the same claims from being brought again, but it is not a court ruling that determines ownership of the mark.

The filing records no financial settlement, no exchange of capital, and no newly agreed ownership split. Ronald’s August 2022 federal trademark registration remains on record in his name. Rudolph’s estate had argued that the group, founded in Cincinnati in 1954 alongside their late brother O’Kelly Isley Jr., operated as a common-law partnership and that its assets were shared.

The distinction matters: the dismissal ends this lawsuit, while Ronald’s existing registration remains in place. The court did not decide whether he has sole ownership of the Isley Brothers name.
