Master P Says “You Can’t Please Everybody” About Jay-Z’s Target Deal

By Lora·August 14, 2026·1 min read

The intersection of hip-hop royalty and corporate retail is rarely clean, especially when political battle lines are drawn. Jay-Z recently faced heavy criticism for partnering with Target for an exclusive special edition vinyl release of his classic debut album, Reasonable Doubt. The partnership drew backlash from Black consumers over Target’s 2025 rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Pastor Jamal Bryant, who launched the formal boycott, said earlier in 2026 that it had ended, though criticism of the retailer continued. Now, No Limit Records founder Master P is weighing in. Speaking with DJ Greg Street on V-103 Atlanta around the 23-minute mark, the mogul defended Jay-Z’s corporate play while acknowledging the community's frustration. According to reporting from K97.5, Master P noted that "you can't please everybody" but validated the boycott's core grievance, pointing out that Black consumers spend $2 trillion annually without seeing sufficient corporate reciprocity. Jay-Z previously doubled down on the partnership during a freestyle at his Yankee Stadium residency, deflecting blame by pointing to consumer reliance on other tech giants like Google and Amazon. It was a defensive, deflecting posture from a billionaire who usually commands the room. Master P, however, kept his focus on the cold mechanics of the industry, stating that 90 percent of the game is business, marketing, and promotion. In the major-retail landscape, those distribution pipelines remain gatekeepers, even for icons.
