In Rotation: ZOT on the WAVE

By Ellis·July 13, 2026·1 min read

I am the guy who always checks the liner notes. If you look at the credits for the Japanese hip-hop records that actually move the needle, ZOT on the WAVE is usually the architect. He spent the last few years supplying the bounce for heavyweights like Awich, BAD HOP, and Kvi Baba. But in April 2024, he packed his bags and left KOWICHI’s Self Made label alongside frequent collaborators Candee and dubby bunny. Independence changes a beatmaker. You stop servicing a roster and start building your own world. He sat in the judge's chair on ABEMA's RAPSTAR 2024, grading the next generation, but his personal output is what I keep running back this week. The track is “Demon.” ZOT pulls jazz and soul textures and anchors them to heavy drum pockets. The hi-hats stutter and roll, snapping with absolute precision while the bassline anchors the groove. He merges street rap grit with undeniable J-Pop melodic sensibilities. It is a tricky balance. Lean too far one way, you lose the clubs. Lean too far the other, you lose the radio. ZOT threads the needle perfectly. Here is the reality about producers stepping out as solo artists: most of them overcomplicate the beat to prove they can. ZOT does the exact opposite. He strips the fat. His 2022 debut single “TEIHEN” with YZERR and Candee proved he knew how to orchestrate a hit under his own banner. “Demon” shows he is sharpening that formula into something lethal. We are witnessing a seasoned hitmaker figure out how to direct his own movie. He understands exactly when to let a vocal breathe and when to let the 808 punch you in the chest. Apple Music just caught the wave, sliding “Demon” onto The New Asia playlist at the #86 spot. The algorithms are simply reacting to what the culture already knows. Hear it below.
