Not many Compton natives figure out their life path while hauling nets on a fishing boat in Alaska. Wallie the Sensei did. Before the Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar co-signs, before the Cactus Jack deal, he was just a kid from the west side of Hub City who grew up singing in the church choir. He walked the exact same blocks that raised Game and Kendrick, but his sound belongs to a different lineage entirely. He didn't even plan on a music career. Wallie only dropped his 2019 debut because he lost a bet to a friend. That wager birthed "Scandalous," which racked up millions of streams and pulled a remix from Detroit's 42 Dugg. Two years later, he drove 26 straight hours from Alabama to Los Angeles and immediately recorded "03 Flow," pouring out a tribute to the incarcerated 03 Greedo. I'll stand on this: modern melodic street rap usually gets trapped in its own bounce, trading actual soul for a fleeting tempo. Wallie forces the beat to match his pain. He uses that church-trained tenor to sing street gospel, sliding over heavy basslines with a vocal tone that feels completely unforced. Look at his recent release, MAD DOGG: The Mixtape, Vol. 1. Hosted by LA radio staple Justin Credible, the tape shows a deeply polished writer. On "BEAM," he trades verses with Roddy Ricch, letting his melodies float right in the pocket of the snare.
