Evan McDonald is a 19-year-old from Philadelphia who produces under the alias slayr and builds rap songs that sound like a corrupted save file from a PlayStation 2 RPG. Philly has a deeply entrenched traditionalist hip-hop lineage, but McDonald completely ignores that shadow. He came up through the internet underground under monikers like Countdragons and SwagSlayer, anchoring his aesthetic in digicore, heavy trap drums, and mythological lore. Before signing to Columbia Records, he dropped projects like Gaia 2 in 2024, constantly refining his chaotic production style. Last year’s Half Blood mixtape and its recent Bloodluxe reissue finally pushed him past the SoundCloud bubble. The new single "promise" shows what happens when the budget matches the vision. A lot of modern rage music sounds like a blown-out Discord server, completely f***ing unlistenable to anyone over twenty-five. Slayr actually knows how to arrange a track. On "promise," the 808s clip the master channel, but the central melody stays perfectly intact. The synths glitch under his vocal and shift tempos right before the hook hits. He uses distortion as an instrument rather than a crutch, proving you can blow out the speakers without losing the underlying songwriting. The industry is catching up to the sound. The official video for "promise" just dropped, and the track is currently sitting at #7 on Spotify’s Most Necessary while climbing Apple Music’s New Music Daily. Radio stations like Hip Hop Nation and Philly’s own WKDU are putting it in rotation. He reveals the tracklist for his upcoming AVANT NOVA EP this Friday. Yeat tapping him for the LOVE/LYFE Tour makes perfect sense. Both artists understand how to manipulate internet energy into stadium-ready anthems. After a scheduled performance at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, slayr hits the road, sliding through The Pavilion At Toyota Music Factory in Irving on August 5. The kid is building an entire universe.
