Malmö, Sweden isn't the first coordinate you punch in when hunting for late-night R&B. cortex changes that math. His hometown debut arrived heavily credentialed, carrying producer co-signs from Drake-adjacent rooms and a partnership with Saw OTB, but the actual music outpaces the industry chatter. His new 15-track album, For What It's Worth, dropped in April via SANA / LISTEN TO THE KIDS. It is a clinic in deflection. A debut project in the lover-boy lane usually begs for sympathy and grace. cortex just corners his subjects. He wants the romance with absolutely none of the accountability, and honestly, that’s exactly the kind of unrepentant villainy the genre needs right now. We have enough nice guys apologizing over trap snares. Give me the artist who leaves you on read and then writes a flawless ballad about how hard the silence was for him. I've had this record in the car all week. It reminds me of that mid-2010s era when the Toronto sound first fractured and went global, mutating in different cities. You hear it immediately on "Hypnotized." He glides over a muted bassline, stacking his vocals high while the drums drag just a fraction behind the pocket. The recent official video visualizes that exact same detachment. Then there is "Days Are Over," where the production strips back to let his tone carry the entire weight of the hook. He brings in Kaliyah on "Make Me Feel" and matt proxy on "Heaven," letting them briefly share the airspace before he snatches the wheel back. The validation is already showing up across the board. Apple Music just slotted "Days Are Over" into the top five of their Breaking R&B playlist, while bumping "Confused" into New in R&B. Spotify is moving in step, handing "Don't Try" a prime spot on Fresh Finds R&B. The curators are finally catching up to what is happening overseas. Hit play below.
