Denim Tears Reclaims the Streets of SoHo with Moko Jumbie Spectacle

April 14, 2026·1 min read

Tremaine Emory’s Denim Tears transformed the gridlock of SoHo into a stage for the African diaspora this week, deploying 10-foot-tall stilt walkers to debut the SS26 collection. The performance draws directly from the Caribbean Moko Jumbie tradition—spirits who crossed the Atlantic to protect their people—reimagined here through bespoke, floor-length iterations of the brand’s signature cotton wreath denim. The activation serves as the launch for 'Denim Tears Denim by Denim Tears,' a dedicated in-house line that further cements Emory’s mission to decouple denim from its singular association with Americana. By draping the Moko Jumbie figures in various washes and the iconic floral motif, the label positions the fabric not just as a workwear staple, but as a vessel for ancestral storytelling and Black historical reclamation. The full collection, featuring the pieces seen on the streets of New York, is scheduled to arrive on April 17.
